Blaming CBI, BJP shows Mamata's desperation

Ganapathi Bhat

This refers to the editorial, “Getting bad to worse” (December 15). Until recently, Ms Mamata Banerjee seemed to be sitting pretty with an impressive show in the lok Sabha election and the Opposition systematically decimated. But the BJP and the CBI seem to have ruffled her, thereby bringing her age-old street-fighter image to the fore. The problem with Ms Banerjee is that she is yet to shed the confrontationist in her, thus crippling her ability to govern. The CBI would not have acted without prima facie evidence.

Ms Banerjee must recall that she was one among those who had welcomed the Supreme Court's directive to the CBI to take over the Saradha scam probe in May. All of a sudden, her penchant to see “political conspiracy” in every step the CBI takes, is nothing but nervous politics. The West Bengal Chief Minister appears to be on the back foot. She must allow the law to take its own course.
