Blame Rahul

Ganapathi Bhat

Sir — This refers to the report, “Stay on, all is forgiven, CWC tells Gandhis” (May 20). The resignation drama is so typical of the Congress that it was largely expected. Without the Nehru-Gandhi tag, the party will be orphaned.

Yet, the dynasty has never shown any interest in other worthwhile leaders of the party.  While earlier leaders like Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi possessed charisma, the same cannot be said of either Ms Sonia Gandhi or Mr Rahul Gandhi. Also, Ms Priyanka Vadra is just an attention-grabber.

Therefore, the Gandhis are the strengths as well as the weakness of the Congress. Since Ms Gandhi has led the party to success earlier, the weak link of the Congress is clear: Mr Rahul Gandhi. The Congress vice president has no real performance to his credit and has been a reluctant politician, running away from his responsibilities.

Mr Gandhi committed blunders which sank the drifting ship of the Congress. His distinct disconnect with the voters and his lack of communication skills destroyed any chance of the Congress in this election. It goes without saying that Ms Sonia Gandhi has to take a call on Mr Rahul Gandhi’s political future. She should identify efficient and clean mass leaders at the State level and project them well. There is no point in looking for scapegoats when the blame should be laid squarely at Mr Gandhi’s doorstep.
