BJP must take lessons from Modi's speech

Ganapathi Bhat

This refers to the editorial, “Now, tryst with New India” (March 15). The BJP's stunning win in two States ,Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, has brought out the pan-India appeal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which has also been acknowledged by top Congress leaders. Now that Goa and Manipur are in the BJP's kitty, the party's domination over a large population of the country is evident. But the party should take care to ensure that complacency and over-confidence does not not creep into the functioning of the party and the party-ruled Governments.

Party leaders have to make sure that the Prime Minister's ‘New India’ vision materialises. Providing efficient, clean, transparent and accountable Governments in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand will be a big challenge for the BJP. Selecting the most appropriate Chief Minister for both States, formation of robust ministries, taking stock of the situation in all BJP-ruled States and, of course, reshuffling the Union Cabinet with ‘horses for courses’ approach are important.
