This refers to the article, “Grandstanding cannot replace Governance” (December 12) by Gautam Mukherjee. The author has analysed the impact of the Aam Aadmi Party's spectacular debut in electoral politics. The AAP was floated to fight corruption in public life, but it has resorted to populist schemes and the bogey of communalism to attract voters. Still, overall, the AAP has set a healthy precedent in electioneering. The India Against Corruption movement, which was the launching pad for the AAP, was one of the factors for the Congress's rout.
The AAP, with limited resources, may not be a force to reckon with in the 2014 general election, but it can play the spoilsport like it has done in Delhi. The country is facing serious challenges on all fronts, and unless the incoming Government at the Centre has a comfortable working strength in Parliament, nothing will change for the better. The BJP needs to project itself as the only viable alternative to win the 2014 election.
