Before it's too late, let's fast-track judicial reform

This refers to the report, “CJI weeps over burden on judiciary” (April 25). Chief Justice of India TS Thakur’s breaking down while addressing a joint conference of Chief Ministers and Chief Justices of High Courts with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s presence on the stage, should not come across as his ‘weakness', but this reflects the true nature of a human being who feels and reacts like others.

On the face of it, Justice Thakur was solicitous about people languishing in jails for long, owing to huge pendency of cases in the courts and thereby causing delayed hearings, often at appallingly long intervals. This plight stems from an inadequate availability of judges in courts while the common man blames the judiciary alone.

However, it augurs well that Modi instantly realised Justice Thakur’s pain and promised to do the needful at the earliest. Hopefully, this burning issue of appointment of judges will be addressed by increasing the number of judges.
