Basic healthcare

Prashant Sharma

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Health coverage for all” (October 1). The universal health insurance programme will definitely benefit the poor as well as the middle class across India.

But lack of money is not the only reason why people cannot afford basic healthcare. It is the woefully inadequate conditions of the Government hospitals and dispensaries in villages and backwards areas of the country that is equally responsible. Without an improvement in the medical infrastructure of the country, the universal health insurance scheme will not be a success.
