Bangladesh ties welcome but illegal immigrants must leave

Azhar A Khan

This refers to the editorial, “Cementing Dhaka ties” (June 25) and the article, “Sari diplomacy in South Asia” (June 26) by Mayuri Mukherjee which have highlighted various dimension of the India-Bangladesh relations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's laudable policy of maintaining cordial relations with our close neighbours will have bigger success if the contentious issues are not pushed under the carpet as some of the experts often tend to suggest. In any exchange of free and frank opinions, it is essential that the Bangladeshi authorities keep in mind that billions in India remain gravely concerned about the tragedy that has fallen on the Hindus/Buddhists in Bangladesh since Partition.

Though there is a vibrant and forward-looking civil society in Bangladesh, the religious minorities are victims of blatant discrimination, denial and deprivation. While the Union Government has to provide shelter to the victims of religious-ethnic cleansing, others have to go back. We cannot afford another demographic imbalance and partition.
