Sir — Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has reportedly concurred with the view that poor or biased umpiring was responsible for her team’s defeat in the World Cup at the hands of India. Had she not done so, she would have been treated as pro-India — an image that she has already been given by her political opponents because of her friendly attitude to New Delhi. Her main opponent, Begum Khaleda Zia, who is struggling to regain the central political space, would have pounced upon the opportunity. Politicians often do or speak things which they do not necessarily believe in or support.
