Sir — This refers to the raids conducted by the Central Bureau of Investigation on the residence of Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh. It is satisfying that India’s premier investigating agency is acting against sitting political rulers of the country. But the big question is: Can the CBI, which is under the control of the Union Government, conduct a similar raid against the Chief Ministers of States that are ruled by the ruling partyIJ
There have been instances under the previous regime wherein the CBI changed its stand against sitting and former Chief Ministers according to the requirements of political bosses at the Centre, for which even the CBI was grilled by the courts.
The CBI was put out of the ambit of Right to Information Act, only after an RTI petition tried to grill CBI on its changing stands against the leaders. Fairness demands that the CBI may again be put under the RTI Act to prevent misuse.
