Article 370 needs to be rationally discussed

J Akshobhya

This refers to the editorial, “Blackmail at its worst” (May 30). The very mention of Article 370 raises a hue and cry from various quarters. Frankly speaking, an average Indian does not know much about the provisions of this Article. We need to be rightly educated regarding the finer aspects and the national implications of this very important statute.

Congress veteran Karan Singh, whose father, Maharaja Hari Singh signed Kashmir's Instrument of Accession, has rightly appealed to the Bharatiya Janata Party and parties in Jammu & Kashmir to tone down the rhetoric on Article 370. But he has also accepted that an “integral” view of the matter was “overdue”.

I suggest that eminent jurists, who are apolitical persons, should sit alongside a core group from the BJP, discuss Article 370 threadbare, and come to conclusions on whether its continuance is necessary or that it should be abrogated.
