Arrogant superpower

Janga Bahadur Sunuwar

Sir — It is unfortunate that the US authorities arrested and humiliated Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade on charges of visa fraud. This is not the first instance of the US insulting an Indian. Film star Shah Rukh Khan had been subjected to humiliation at a US airport, and so had been former President APJ Abdul Kalam.

On the one hand, America talks of strengthening its relationship with India. On the other, it ill-treats Indian citizens and diplomats with the selective use of its laws. It’s absurd that the US creates complications for Indian diplomats while it own diplomats abroad are less-than-clean. It is good that the Government has responded strongly against the sordid treatment of Ms Khobragade. However, this issue mustn’t affect long-term relations between the two countries.
