Arrogant activist

M Ratan

Sir — This refers to the Delhi High Court’s verdict on Greenpeace activist Priya Pillai’s petition against the Government’s restrictions on her travel to london to speak to British MPs on alleged human rights violations in Madhya Pradesh. Ms Pillai is, understandably, jubilant about the court’s judgement.

No one disputes her right to travel abroad or her freedom of expression in a democracy like ours. However, Ms Pillai’s arrogant assertions, as if she, her NGO and co-thinkers had a monopoly over pro-tribal views, are disgusting.

Ms Pillai also seemed to hold the elected Government of Madhya Pradesh in contempt, as also elected representatives of the tribals. Her political inclinations became evident when she dragged the land acquisition legislation in a TV debate, as yet another ‘proof’ of the regime’s anti-farmer, anti-tribal attitude.

However, when Ms Pillai was asked why she was more interested in anti-India propaganda overseas, instead of pursuing the matter within the country, she had no convincing reply.
