Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Death is not the answer” (April 23). A spate of diabolic rapes and murders across the country has generated immense anger and revulsion. However, the Union Cabinet’s move to introduce capital punishment for sexual assaults on minors may turn counterproductive as this may encourage the rapists to not leave the victim alive for fear of being tracked/hanged soon.
In this light, life imprisonment with solitary confinement and other hard provisions in place of capital punishment for rapes appears to be a better alternative.
