Letter to the Editor

A visionary who has been good to India

Ganapathi Bhat

This refers to the editorial, “Spoken like a statesman” (January 16). The first African-American President in the history of America, Barack Obama, signed-off his presidency with a stylish but emotional farewell address. Obama, who came to power in 2009 with high expectations, riding on the catchy “Yes, we can” slogan, felt he did the job expected of him. His farewell speech was laced with present achievements, possible failures and subtle future warning.

A leader has to have full faith in his people, and, by all accounts, Obama cherished in firmly believing the people of the US. Obama's take on equal opportunity to all, in every sphere of life, could not have come at a better time when the world is threatened by prejudicial mindsets eager to break the peace and harmony across religions and races. When he said, “Nobody is more America”, he appeared to send a message or two to his successor Donald Trump. The visionary leader, who firmly thought that any ideological barrier was not immune to being cemented, was also good to India and its people.
