Balancing act

KV Seetharamaiah

Sir — Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been doing his best to turn foes into friends. Modi’s foreign tours have been showing tangible results. In his zeal to befriend the enemies, he has not been compromising with the nation’s interests. For instance, the refusal to join China’s ‘One Belt and One Road’ Project. Modi has rightly pointed out that the militarisation of the disputed territory, South China Sea is both unacceptable and a grave threat to peaceful existence co-existence. The presence of Pakistani President Mamnoon Hussain at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit provided impetus to Modi to voice his concern over the continuing breach of lOC. A notable development in the SCO summit was that India offered China to open its bank branch in India and as a quid pro quo China offered some concessions on exports of its pharmaceutical products to China. It would be good if this is converted as a thaw to improve the sagging relations between India and China.
