Sir - Our banking sector need urgent and comprehensive revamping, failing which a major chunk of bank funds will continue to be siphoned off as non-performing assets. The policy of presenting a clean and charming balance-sheet by the banks, apparently by writing-off bad loans, is against the interest of the country. In the past two decades, our corporate sector has been benefitted to the tune of billions of rupees by such a write-off system and once again making gargantuan provisions towards NPAs is dubious and questionable. The lackadaisical attitude of bank officials in recovering dues from those who have availed of these easy loans is near-criminal and accountability must be demanded of them.
