Letter to the Editor

Man-made disaster

Bal Govind

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Infrastructural apathy” (October 2). On the one hand, tehre are a few natural disasters, cyclones, wildfires, heat waves, earthquakes and landslides etc,  where we cannot do much but then there are few man-made disaster like the stampede at the Parel-Elphinstone footover bridge in Mumbai, where blame squarely lies with us. On the one hand, we are targeting smart cities, on the other, we see our urban infrastructure crumbling in front of our eyes.

We need to wake up our conscience and need to put some price on our lives and make our Governments responsible for such tragedies. If our Government can not provide this basic safety to our citizens even in metro cities, then we can conclude what would be the state of affairs in smaller towns.

Disaster management and mock drill should be part of basic infrastructure in our cities and citizens must know how to behave and act in such situation. For that continuous awareness campaign needs to be held.
