Letter to the Editor

Safety first

Bal Govind

Sir  — This refers to the editorial, “Drones : A Real threat” (August 22). The drone incident at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport might not have resulted in an accident, but it is indeed an alarming sign that a device, which is meant for recreational purposes as well as official purposes, by news and TV channels, can really become a threat to the safety of the passengers.

Though it would be naive to penalise a commoner by not allowing him to use this device for trivial purposes, at the same time, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation needs to ensure that a final policy for drone usage is given shape and make sure that it comes into existence at the earliest. A geographical limit can be decided, within which, a drone should not be allowed to roam in certain places. We can not wait for an accident to happen before we act on this.
