Letter to the Editor

Challenges ahead

MC Joshi

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Setting House in order” (August 7). With the election of M Venkaiah Naidu as Vice President, for the first time in the country’s parliamentary history all the four top constitutional posts — President, Vice President, lok Sabha Speaker, and Prime Minister — have been occupied by persons linked with BJP background. Before taking over their offices, they have taken oath to protect and abide by the Constitution. It is a golden opportunity for all leaders to clear many misgivings about the persons coming from the BJP wing and assert their commitment in protecting the secular and plural nature of India and its cultural diversity.

Meanwhile, Naidu enjoys good relations with leaders across party lines. However, he will have a challenging task as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha where the ruling establishment is still short of numbers and the Opposition is more disruptive, less cooperative.
