Letter to the Editor

Balancing act

Azhar A Khan

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Presidential qualities” (July 21). The election for the 14th President of India is over, and President-elect Ram Nath Kovind is supposed to take over from President Pranab Mukherjee soon. The political leanings of the President often stand in the way of the presidential duties as is evident from many previous President’s stance.

Given the present times, the post of the head of the state is not a bed of roses at all, but endowed with challenges. The President-elect is expected to evolve his public persona as a President who neither wilts under duress coming to his way, like Rajendra Prasad, nor does he allows his work to encroach upon the constitutional domain of the ruling regime. The President of India needs to be adept at the art of balancing both sides well.
