Defining roles

Arun

Sir — This refers to the article, “Implications of CRPF restraint” (April 25) by Deepak Sinha. The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) does not operate in isolation. It is an adjunct to the State police or the administration in maintenance of law and order and are guided as per district administrative requirements.

I do not agree with the writer’s words that a CRPF constable being heckled, shows the failure of the command, because detachments are deployed in penny packets, under various police stations, as per the needs of civil administration.

The constable showed restraint by not being provoked. It’s a sad reflection of the Government machinery of subverted police and administration. As to the interference by the courts, the Army has to learn to operate with this albatross around its neck. Do not expect any compassion, sympathy or any leniency from the courts. The Army has a cut-out role and should not get involved with policing job.
