Letter to the Editor

Soon forgotten

P Arihanth

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Two leaves out of bounds” (March 25). At a time when the RK Nagar by election is being seen as a litmus test for the future of the ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), the Election Commission has not covered itself with glory by the manner in which it has given its interim order to block the AIADMK’s ‘Two leaves’ party symbol. The symbol has been synonymous with the AIADMK since it was founded by actor-turned-politician MG Ramachandran but now stands replaced for the two factions of the party.

It is unfortunate that a hat (AIADMK Amma) or an electric pole (AIADMK Puratchi Thalaivi Amma) bears no resemblance to the Two leaves. J Jayalalithaa had a virtual cult following among the people but mere lip service is being paid to her memory by party leaders who swore by her at every step. The factional squabble over her legacy is indeed shameful and unseemly.
