Letter to the Editor

Respecting democracy

Azhar A Khan

Sir — This refers to the editorial,  “Now, tryst with New India” (March15). With the most significant State, Uttar Pradesh, having changed hands, following the ruling Samajwadi Party’s massive defeat at the hands of the BJP, which came to power with thumping majority after an appalling wait, the ritual blame-game, excuses and triumphalism are but natural.

But, elections being one of the salient features of democracy, everyone ought to accept the public mandate like the outgoing Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, who worked like a Trojan, but was still composed and smiling while putting his papers to Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik.

As regards the allegations of the electronic voting machines allegedly being rigged, it is for the election watchdog and the apex court to probe into the matter.
