Change laws

TKM Kumbalamchuvattil

Sir — This refers to the article, “Now, re-monetisation challenge” (November 30) by Shivaji Sarkar. The author’s animadversion, that in the unofficial market, a dollar costs more than Rs70 and speculatively the future black money would be  stashed in foreign currencies, is appalling. Since a major chunk of the population still belongs to the low-income category, the tax-payers are diminutive. The exposition that India gigantically spends for a trivial amount of income tax, around Rs1.75 crore by deploying enormous bureaucrats, is disgraceful. Bizarre regulations that exempt tribals from paying income tax, despite their leviathan earnings, unmasks the ludicrousness of our laws. The author’s proposal to do away with the income tax system or fix it to 15 per cent, is pragmatic.
