Policy change

JS Acharya

This refers to the editorial, “Calling Pakistan’s bluff” (October 1). In a radical break from its Pakistan policy and in what effectively changes the rules of the game for its terror-sponsoring neighbour, India carried out surgical strikes in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, targetting and destroying terrorist launch pads and killing terrorists.

This was bound to happen one day. All that was required was was a push becoming a shove —which Uri provided. But, above all, it needed political will and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has definitely retrieved the political capital he lost after not responding to earlier terrorist outrages.

America’s advice to Pakistan to mothball UN-indicted militant outfits, indirectly rationalises the operation. Having made its point with deadly force, India must now show restraint.

When emotion runs high, it is easy to stumble into a war. The political leadership should avoid that mistake.
