Good start

Sir — The protest against the proposed punishment for traffic violations has some valid reasons. There is no need to impose a sperate penalty for rash driving and speeding. It is possible to keep a check on speeding, if every vehicle is fitted with a speed governor. Also, rash driving and speeding are synonymous.

The penalty for rash driving and speeding together can be pegged at Rs15,000, without any change in penalty for drunk driving. However, the opposition of major trade unions to the Road Transport and Safety Bill, 2014, does not hold water when the Government’s effort can reduce the number of accidents.
