Sir — It is good that the Union Government has taken a citizen-friendly decision by minimising, if not eliminating, the need for affidavits in Government offices. It is an archaic British legacy which needed to go. We need many amendments to our legal system. Self-attestation is a much better practice, with a declaration that the individual is willing to be penalised if the information he or she provides is false. The widespread demand for affidavits and attested documents makes citizens run from pillar to post.
