Unfair treatment

Sagar Singh

Sir —This refers to the news regarding the eviction of Campa Cola Society residents in Mumbai, who have defied the deadline of the civic authorities’ notice of evicting 108 flats in seven different buildings and handing over the keys to the corporation.

It is true that prior to the purchase of these flats from the dishonest builders, the residents should have scrutinised all the documents, but it is truer that when the builders had exceeded the permitted limit of five levels in each building, the civic authorities did not take cognisance. Had they done so, gullible buyers would have been saved from the present crisis.

Obviously, the authorities might have been in tandem with the unscrupulous builders at the cost of the would-be buyers. These unsuspecting buyers are now at the threshold of losing their hard-earned money. The errant builders have almost nothing to lose (they can at the most be fined a fraction of what they have already made), but the buyers have everything to be deprived of.
