Sir — This refers to the report, “Bollywood slugs it out over secular politics” (April 17). Certainly, film personalities who have written the appeal to vote for “secular” parties have the backing of the Congress, which is primarily responsible in keeping such issues alive for political gains.

Most political parties select candidates on the basis of religious and caste equations of a constituency. They ignore persons who have done good work in a particular area and for the nation in general.

Ironically, when a leader leaves the BJP, he becomes secular. When someone joins the BJP, he becomes communal. Riots in Gujarat were committed by communal forces but the parties that instigated the riots in Delhi, Mumbai, Kashmir and Muzaffarnagar are not communal! Will the chieftains of Bollywood define secularismIJ

To quote Bahadur Shah Zafar, “Na thi hal ki jab hame apne khabar, rahe dekhte auron ke aib-o-hunar. Pari apni buraeyon par jo nazar, to nigah main koi bura na raha.”
