Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Yes, debate Article 370” (December 3). Mr Narendra Modi has raised a valid point. There is an urgent need to discuss Article 370 which is applicable only to Jammu & Kashmir.

Over the years, apart from it keeping New Delhi on tenterhooks, the provision has been projected as a saviour for kashmiriyat. However, in reality, it has only served as a camouflage for the political leadership of the State to perpetuate its rule and strengthen its grip on power.Heavens will not fall if discussions are held on the issue in the right perspective and in a cordial atmosphere. If we can hold talks with a recalcitrant neighbour, why cannot there be a debate with the stakeholders on Article 370IJ

Article 370 has kept the masses impoverished, and denied them their due share in economic advancement. The gulf between the rich and the poor has only widened under this Article. If the provision is meant to protect and preserve the cultural identity of Kashmir, then the rule should be apply equally to other States, all of which have their own distinct ethnic identity. Yet, other States have neither a separate Constitution nor a separate flag, and are still are ahead of Jammu & Kashmir economically.
