YSRCP Tirupati MP Maddila Gurumoorthy has approached President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Chief Justice of India (CJI) and other senior authorities, alleging electoral violence and police inaction during the Tirupati Municipal Corporation mayoral nomination process.
Gurumoorthy alleged that TDP activists snatched nomination proposer papers from him in the presence of police personnel, obstructing the nomination process. He has sought urgent intervention, an impartial inquiry and measures to ensure the safety of candidates and their proposers.
According to the MP, he attended the nomination process as a proposer when a local Deputy Superintendent of Police stopped him and asked to examine his documents. Gurumoorthy said that as he produced the papers, TDP activists allegedly snatched them from his hands and fled. He further alleged that police personnel present at the spot failed to intervene.
The allegations have raised questions about security arrangements during the nomination process. However, the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the alleged role of the individuals involved and the conduct of police personnel, require independent verification.
Gurumoorthy stated that complaints had been lodged on October 16 regarding alleged violence and obstruction at Booth Nos. 57, 58 and 59. He alleged that adequate preventive measures were not taken despite the complaints, leading to further disruption on October 17. The MP has submitted representations to the President, the Prime Minister, the CJI, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the Andhra Pradesh Governor, the Chief Election Commissioner, the National Human Rights Commission, the Union Home Secretary, the Andhra Pradesh Director General of Police and the Tirupati Superintendent of Police.
In his representations, Gurumoorthy cited the Andhra Pradesh High Court’s October 15 order in W.P. No. 30103/2026, which he said addressed the availability of timely legal remedies for candidates facing threats during the nomination process. He has demanded the recovery of the allegedly snatched papers, registration of a criminal case, preservation of CCTV footage, an impartial inquiry into the alleged police inaction and action against those found responsible. He has also sought adequate security for candidates and proposers.
The allegations have brought the conduct of the nomination process and the responsibility of law enforcement agencies under scrutiny. An official response from the police and election authorities, along with the version of the TDP, would be necessary to establish the sequence of events and determine whether any procedural or legal violations occurred.
The outcome of any inquiry and the action taken on the MP’s representations are likely to be important in addressing concerns over electoral security in Tirupati. Ensuring that all candidates and their representatives can participate in the election process without intimidation remains central to maintaining public confidence in democratic institutions.
