In a shocking incident of witch hunting, an elderly couple was killed in Assam’s Kokrajhar district on Sunday night, police said.

Police said that one Som Murmu (61) and his wife Fulmoni Mardi (58) have been killed by three villagers after branding them as witches.“We have arrested three persons — Dimnesh Hasda (30), Christo Besra (22) and Tala Murmu (21) for the killing and they have confessed their crime. After killing the couple, the three also buried the bodies in a nearby jungle,” police said.

Police, however, said that there was an enmity between the victims and accused. “We are going to retrieve the bodies after their confession. We are also investigating as to what enmity led the youths to kill the elderly couple,” police added. This is the third incident of witch hunting this month in Assam. While some villagers had tortured a veteran athlete in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district earlier this month branding her as witch, three elderly women were also beaten up severely by a section of villagers at Kakopathar in Tinsukia district last week.
