Veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Deputy Prime Minister Lal Krishna Advani, 98, was admitted to Indraprastha Apollo Hospital in New Delhi on Friday evening with a chest infection. Hospital officials said his condition is stable.

Advani was brought to the hospital at around 7.30 pm and admitted to the pulmonary department. He is undergoing treatment and remains under observation by a team of doctors, with medical tests underway.

This is his second reported hospitalisation at Apollo Hospital this year. He was admitted in May due to age-related health complications and was discharged after receiving treatment for a few days.

Advani was also admitted to the hospital’s intensive care unit in December 2024 for medical management and investigations. His condition was reported to be stable at the time, and he was later discharged.

One of the senior-most leaders of the BJP, Advani served as India’s Deputy Prime Minister from 2002 to 2004 under Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He also served as Union Home Minister and played a key role in the BJP’s political expansion, including through the 1990 Ram Rath Yatra.

In 2024, Advani was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, in recognition of his contribution to public life.
