The State Government blamed the social media and a particular video for the Muzaffarnagar violence in which 21 people have been killed so far.
State Inspector General of Police (Crime, STF) Ashish Gupta said here on Sunday that rumours through bulk SMS, Facebook, Twitter, and Whatsup was the reason for the spurt in violence.
Clarifying about a particular video being circulated through Whatsup, Gupta said the video was uploaded in Youtube two years back and it also seems that the incident was of another country.
Appealing to the people not to take notice of the rumours and to ignore the social media, he said that Government has limited options in controlling the social media or bulk SMS.“We are considering to file FIRs over the circulation of video after taking all options,’’ he said.
