To build pressure on the BJP-led NDA Government, the Uttar Pradesh unit of the Congress will protest on May 6 against the Centre over its move to increase prices of petrol and diesel. Congress State president Nirmal Khatri said on Sunday that the Centre has burdened consumers by increasing prices after prices of crude oil in international market were hiked. This is done to benefit capitalists, he said, adding, “The irony is that when prices of crude oil were low in the international market the Centre did not reduce prices in that ratio. The price of crude oil is $107 per barrel and petrol is costing Rs70 per litre but when the crude oil price came down to $50 per barrel, the petrol price was reduced to just Rs2 per litre. “This shows that the Union Government has not passed on the cut to consumers on same ratio. And now when prices of the crude oil have gone up, the Centre has hiked prices by almost Rs4.50 per litre. This is done with only intention to extend maximum profit to petroleum companies,” he said.
