The anti-talk faction of the Ulfa, led by Paresh Baruah, on Friday warned of armed resistance, if the Central Government goes ahead with the construction works of the stalled lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Power Project (lSHPP) at Gerukamukh along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh.

The banned organisation said that they have been extending their moral support to all the groups and organisations, opposing the construction of the 2,000 MW power project.

“However, we would be forced to put up armed resistance if the Central Government goes ahead with the construction works while defying the ongoing opposition to the project by of the people of Assam,” said a statement issued by the Commander-in-Chief of the organisation Paresh Baruah.

The Ulfa statement came a day after the Union Power Ministry held a two-day-long discussion with the experts concerned and agitating groups over the impasse on the mega power project. The banned outfit also put up a few conditions before the Central Government goes ahead with the construction works of the project.

“The foundation of the existing power project is based on sedimentary rock. It is not advisable to construct such a huge power project on sedimentary rock. So the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) must change the geographic location of the project or go for constructing of small power projects,” said the statement.
