Two suspected NSCN(K) cadres were killed while another was injured after an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), which they were carrying to plant, exploded near Indo-Myanmar border in Arunachal Pradesh on Tuesday. An Assam Rifles spokesman confirmed this and said that the group of militants had, however, managed to carry back the injured militant with the help of locals.

The incident took place on Tuesday morning at Wakka in longding district of Arunachal Pradesh and is only 7 kms away from the Indo-Myanmar border. The place of occurrence is also close to an Assam Rifles post in the area. “The villagers told us that a group of militants came with the IEDs and they wanted to plant it, probably to target the Assam Rifles personnel. The bomb, however, got exploded all of a sudden killing two cadres on the spot,” said the AR spokesman while quoting the locals.

“The rest of the militants later forced the villagers at gunpoint to carry the injured militant,” he said adding that the security forces immediately launched an operation in and around the area. The security forces, had also recovered one live IED and a remote control from the place of occurrence,” the AR spokesman said.

The NSCN(K) militants, who had withdrawn from the ceasefire agreement with the Government of India in March this year, had stepped up its violence against the forces in the last two months. On Sunday, the militants fired at an Assam Rifles camp at lazu in Tirap district. There is, however, no causality as the security forces were on alert and retaliated the firing immediately, forcing the militants to escape.

On June 4, the militants had ambushed a convoy of the Army’s Dogra Regiment at Chandel in Manipur and killed 18 soldiers and injured 11 others. The NSCN (K) and Manipur-based Kanglei Yawol Kanna lup (KYKl) and the Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP) had claimed responsibility for the attack on June 4. Army Chief General Dalbir Singh Suhag had visited the Chandel and reviewed Army’s operation against the militants. The Government of India had already started an operation against the militants.
