The Assam Police has arrested a top Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) cadre from Cachar district in Assam’s Barak valley and handed him over to the West Bengal Police.
Cachar district Superintendent of Police, Rajveer Singh said that the accused Shahidul Islam alias Shamim was nabbed from Katigora area in the district on Sunday night.
“We have got a lead from the West Bengal police regarding Islam. Initially, we were told that he was involved in a case relating to fake Indian currency notes (FICN),” he said adding that he was handed over to the West Bengal police on Monday.
The SP, however, refused to divulge much and only said that the accused was interrogated by the West Bengal Police only.
A senior official of the Assam police later told that Shahidul Islam hails from Barpeta district in Assam. “Shahidul has been living in Cachar for last five months. He is one of the top cadres of the JMB module, which was operating in Assam,” he said adding that a detail interrogation will reveal whether he was planning some subversive activities in the area.
