TMC scoffs at Rajnath 'lynching' speech

Hours after Union Minister Rajnath Singh reminded that law and order was a State subject while giving his speech on increased cases of lynching in various States, Trinamool Congress came out with a mordant reply that it took so many years for the BJP Government to understand that law and order was in fact a State subject.

“It is good that finally they have realised that law and order is a State subject and not a Central domain as appeared from their conduct these many years. We are happy that finally they have understood our point and reconciled with what we have been telling,” TMC general secretary Partho Chatterjee said on Thursday.

Chatterjee whose statement came hours before the TMC was to vote in favour of a no-confidence motion against the BJP Government also reminded how “such law and order problems like lynching are taking place in the BJP-ruled States only showing that law and order conditions in those States are so poor.” Earlier Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that she was backing the no-confidence motion in the greater interest of the Opposition unity.

She said not only the Opposition parties but through them the people at large would also express their angst and views against the Narendra Modi Government. Banerjee earlier issued a whip to the Trinamool Congress MPs to remain present and vote for the no-confidence motion likely to be brought against the BJP Government on Friday.

“We are supporting the motion in the greater interest and in the interest of the Opposition unity,” Banerjee said, adding “the BJP may have the numbers in the House but they do not have support outside.
