Telangana reels under heat as mercury shoots up

Omer Farooq

Though the summer was yet to set in officially, entire Telangana, especially the northern region and Hyderabad have started feeling its heat. With the temperature crossing 38 degrees, more than five degrees above normal for this time of the year, people were anxious about the intensity of the summer this year.

While Adilabad was the hottest place in the state with 39 degrees Celsius, Hyderabad recorded 38.2 degrees C on Sunday last, making it the second hottest ever day after 39.1 degrees on 26, 2009. According to the weather officials in Hyderabad the temperature in Hyderabad most of these days was around 38 degrees.

Weather office has warned that these hot conditions will continue till the end of the month due to the various factors including lack of rains and low humidity. Making matters worse for the people during most of the winter, specially in the month of January temperatures remained much above the normal making it a very dry and hot spell.

According to the experts at the Indian Meteorologicla department, especially in Hyderabad city the rocky terrain was contributing significantly to the high temperature in the afternoon.

Experts have already made grim forecasts that the summer this year will be harsher and much longer as it has started much in advance with no sign of any pre summer showers, a phenomenon which helps in checking the temperature.

The State has already tasted the wrath of the summer heat wave last year in which more than 2,000 people died.

People in most of the towns and villages were already facing the drinking water problem as the ground water levels have dipped dangerously low. Wells and bore wells have dried and the water levels in reservoirs have gone down affecting the supply of water to the major town and cities.  A fodder crisis was also staring in the eyes.

Monsoon had badly failed last year leaving most parts of Telangana in the clutches of severe drought.
