A total of 45 were injured, one of them left with broken tooth, when a lady teacher allegedly assaulted them for ‘disobedience’ in a Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in Assam’s Bodoland Territorial Areas Districts (BTAD).
At least 15 others of the students had to be hospitalised, the district administration officials said, adding that the girls were students of Classes VI to VIII.
The incident occurred at the girls’ hostel of the JNV and it came to the fore after the parents of some of the injured students lodged formal complaints with the school authorities as well as with the district police on Sunday.
Officials said that the alleged assault took place on Thursday but it came to light on Sunday when some of the students informed their parents about it. The district authorities have served a show-cause notice to the teacher, asking her to give an explanation about her action. “Appropriate action would be taken against her if found guilty,” Kokrajhar additional deputy commissioner Dinesh Bodo said.
The teacher, however, has justified her action saying the students became disobedient and hence, she had to “control” them by giving them punishment.
