Speculation is growing within the BJP that former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister and current Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan could soon be appointed as the party’s national president.
Party insiders note that the post is among the most crucial in the organisation, demanding a leader who enjoys broad acceptability, commands respect across party ranks, projects an image of inclusiveness and has the ability to unite different factions.
Chouhan, a four-time Chief Minister, is seen as one of the few leaders in the BJP who meets these criteria, making him a strong contender for the top post.
Chouhan’s 45-minute meeting with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Sunday has added fuel to the speculation. Although the contents of the meeting have not been disclosed, political observers point out that its timing is significant.
With organisational elections around the corner, the RSS is expected to have a decisive influence on the selection of the BJP’s next national president. Chouhan’s administrative experience, accessibility, down-to-earth image, and longstanding association with the Sangh are considered strong factors in his favour.
Other senior BJP leaders are also reportedly being considered for the post, including Union Ministers Dharmendra Pradhan, Nitin Gadkari and Piyush Goyal.
All three leaders are seen as capable administrators with deep organisational experience, but Chouhan’s mass appeal, familiarity with party dynamics and ability to balance competing factions reportedly give him an edge over his peers.
The developments come against the backdrop of the NDA fielding CP Radhakrishnan as its vice-presidential candidate, a move widely interpreted as reflecting the RSS’s preferences.
Analysts believe that the same influence could play a key role in determining the next BJP president. The selection is expected to be a critical factor in shaping the party’s organisational cohesion and electoral strategy in the run-up to forthcoming elections.
Political commentators highlight that Chouhan’s potential elevation is significant for consolidating party in Madhya Pradesh and across other key states. His leadership style, grassroots connect, and long experience in governance and party organisation make him a credible choice to guide the BJP through upcoming electoral challenges.
As deliberations continue within party circles, Chouhan’s candidature appears to enjoy substantial support from both the BJP leaders and the RSS, positioning him as a leading contender for one of the most influential roles in Indian politics.
The final decision is expected in the coming weeks, with attention focused on how the party balances experience, acceptability and strategic vision in the selection process.
