Special status delay makes Andhra Opposition restive

Omer Farooq

With the issue of special status to Andhra Pradesh flaring up following the self-immolation of a Congress worker and the Congress and the YSRCP intensifying their agitations by calling a strike, a worried Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has sought an appointment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

As the emotions were running high in the State with people getting restive over the lack of action by the TDP and the BJP, Naidu told a public meeting in Visakhapatanam that he has sought an appointment with the Prime Minister to discuss the issue and resolve it at the earliest. “I also writing letters to the Union Ministers,” he said promising that he will fight till he gets the promised special status as it will bring a lot of financial help for the resource-starved State.

Naidu and his TDP came under tremendous pressure from the Opposition to quit the BJP-led NDA Government at the center after a categorical statement by one of the Union Ministers that granting special status to AP was not possible as it will trigger similar demands from the other States.

Situation has only worsened following the self-immolation by a Congress worker Mani Koti on Saturday last during a protest meeting by the Congress party.

46-year-old Mani Koti, who committed self-immolation two days ago protesting against the delay in granting special category status to Andhra Pradesh after the bifurcation of the State, had turned into a symbol of fight for the justice with truncated State of AP.
