SP, BSP can keep BJP at bay: Ram Gopal

Samajwadi Party’s general secretary Ram Gopal Yadav said that both BSP and SP as a combined force can stop emergence of communal forces in UP but also said that Mayawati would not join hands with SP as “she was self-centered and never thought about the society”.

“If SP and BSP join hands the communal forces like BJP would be pushed out of the race for the 2017 Assembly polls. But Mayawati would not agree to it. Her mindset is different. The BSP president is self-centered,” he told reporters here on Tuesday. He said BSP’s rise began in 1993 after its founder Kanshi Ram joined hands with Mulayam Singh Yadav. “Kanshi Ram was a person with vision who can assess future, but Mayawati is only interested in her own gain,” he said.

Yadav, who is younger brother of Mulayam Singh Yadav, said despite a poor show by BSP in the lok Sabha polls, there would be triangular contest between SP, BJP and BSP. In some places, Congress candidates will also make their presence felt in the 2017 Assembly elections. He said a new formula would be put to test in the coming Vidhan Sabha elections in Bihar where Janata Dal (united) and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) would emerge and contest under a single banner. The result of that election would be different, he said. Asked whether election symbol would come in the way in the alliance, Yadav said there would not be any hindrance as in 1977 lok Sabha polls Janata Party candidates had contested on the symbol of the lok Dal.

Hitting out at BJP, he said that the party was encouraging ‘horse trading’ in the January 23 State legislative Council polls. “BJP which has just eight additional votes for the second seat against required 31 votes, is involved in horse-trading of the MlAs, thus violating the ethics of the democracy,” Yadav alleged. Yadav said that all the eight candidates of the SP would win in the first round and the main contest will be between the second candidate of BJP and the third candidate of BSP. Congress had already announced its support to the SP candidates in the council polls. Congress has 28 members in the State Assembly while the SP required just eight additional vote for its eighth candidate.

Elections to the 12 seats of UP Council polls would be held on January 23 in which 13 candidates are in the fray — eight from SP, three from BSP and two from BJP. The SP general secretary said that though Congress is supporting SP in the council polls there would not be any alliance between both the parties in the coming elections. The leader was, however, not satisfied with the functioning of Uttar Pradesh Government. “In some front Government has done exceptional work. But I am not fully satisfied with the functioning of the State Government. Much more needs to be done,” he said.
