Six faculty members of Gauhati University have been included in the 2026 World’s Top 2 per cent Scientists list, highlighting the university’s contributions to scientific research and academic excellence. Compiled using research data and citation metrics, the list is associated with Stanford University and Elsevier, a Netherlands-based academic publishing and research analytics company. This achievement brings pride to Assam and the wider Northeast region.
The faculty members recognised in the list are Professor Bhupendra Nath Goswami, ANRF PM Professor and Professor of Excellence at Gauhati University; Professor Prodeep Phukan, Department of Chemistry; Professor Bipan Hazarika, Department of Mathematics; Professor Ranjit Thakuria, Department of Chemistry; Dr Arun Kumar Dutta, Department of Botany; and Dr Lachit Dutta, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering.
The list draws on research led by Professor John PA Ioannidis of Stanford University and his team. It identifies influential researchers using a range of bibliometric indicators, including citations, the h-index, the co-authorship-adjusted hm-index, and other measures of research impact.
Congratulating the faculty members on this achievement, Gauhati University Vice-Chancellor Professor Nani Gopal Mahanta stated, “This recognition is a matter of great pride for Gauhati University. I firmly believe that this research achievement will inspire our researchers to pursue new ideas, innovations, and excellence in their future academic and research endeavours.”
