Hyderabad: Three friends who went missing while returning from Bahraich were found dead inside their car after it plunged into a pond in Uttar Pradesh's Sitapur district, police said on Tuesday (October 27).

Police suspect the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and plunge into the pond. However, the exact circumstances of the incident are still being investigated, Inspector-in-Charge Atul Chaudhary said.

The car was pulled out of the pond near Panchpir village with the help of a crane at around 1:30 am on Tuesday.

The deceased were identified as Rakesh Chaurasia (50) and Satish (40), both residents of Sidhauli, and Ramendra (62), who lived in Ataria.

Chaurasia had travelled to Bahraich with his two friends to visit his son, who had been injured in an accident. The three went missing while returning home, prompting their families to alert the police. A search operation was subsequently launched.

Police said the bodies were sent for postmortem examinations after the inquest proceedings were completed. (with inputs from PTI)
