Hurt, but not retired! Bharatiya Janata Party’s trusted batsman Navjot Singh Sidhu may not hang up his boots and bid adieu to the political arena after all.
A week after his wife, Chief Parliamentary Secretary for Health Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu, accused the BJP for “sidelining” the Amritsar MP, the State BJP leadership on Wednesday made it clear that the former cricketer is the “obvious choice” as party candidate from Amritsar parliamentary constituency.
In a volte-face, the wife of the MP, also changed her pitch on Wednesday. Earlier, she talked about “Sidhu’s decision of not contesting the lok Sabha elections”, but now she has maintained that contesting lok Sabha polls would be the decision of the party high command and Sidhu’s.
The change in line came after Sidhu’s meeting with the party’s national president Rajnath Singh.
Sensing the gravity of the issue, president Rajnath Singh stepped in and asked the cricketer-turned-politician to discuss issues before ‘declaring’ his political inning.
Dr Sidhu, who was being called at the BJP office by the State party leadership to sort out the issue she raised a week before on the social networking site, confirmed that Sidhu has met Rajnath Singh in New Delhi “two-three days ago”.
“Sidhu has met national president Rajnath Singh in Delhi two-three days before, and have clarified everything….the party high command and Sidhu will decide on the issue of contesting lok Sabha polls,” Dr Sidhu told The Pioneer.
Dr Sidhu, on the other hand, said she did not discuss the “Sidhu issue” with the State party president Kamal Sharma, and general secretary (organization) Ajay Jamwal during their almost an hour long meeting at party’s Chandigarh headquarters. “I have come here to discuss some issues concerning my constituency,” said Dr Sidhu.
