SC seeks ideas from States to better sex ratio

PNS

To better the sex ratio, the Supreme Court on Tuesday mulled on incentives to be provided by States to families having girl child as a measure to show respect and honour for girl children.

Giving time till December 11 for States to submit affidavit providing suggestions, the Court termed it “unfortunate” over the “golden silence” maintained by States on such a serious issue. Picking States of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Delhi to verify the bench also cracked the whip on illegal sex determination centres and sought report on the prosecution carried out against such persons over the years.

The UP Government’s affidavit failed to disclose figures of female sex ratio. Dealing with the State’s performance in curbing female foeticide, the bench of Justices Dipak Misra and UU lalit found the data to be a reproduction from the Census 2011 figures. With regard to Haryana and Delhi, the Court failed to find the basis of the figures presented in Court and directed representatives of the States to file an updated report.
