Sarpanch among two killed by Maoists

Staff Reporter

Maoist guerrillas killed two people including a Sarpanch in two separate incidents in Dantewada district, police said on Monday. While a man was beaten brutally to death by them in Tikanpal village under Kirandul Police Station on Sunday, the left wing extremists killed the Sarpanch of Kaurgaon after kidnapping him from his home.

Police officials said that a group of armed rebels raided Tikanpal village on Sunday night and took a few people as hostages. They took them to a nearby place and beat them up so severely that one of them died. The person died is named Ayatu Budu. Other two have sustained critical injuries. No one has, however, reported the matter to the police because of Maoists fear.

The rebels also raided Kaurgaon village under Bangpal Police Station and dragged Sarpanch Mani Ram from his home and took him to the nearby forest. After killing him with a sharp weapon, the rebels threw his body on the road.

In charge of Barsur Police Station Manish Singh Parihar said earlier the Kaurgaon village was coming under his police station. However, after demarcation it now comes under Bangapal Police Station. Parihar said information was received about the killing of Mani Ram by the Maoists. Kaurgaon is located on the other side of the local river, at the distance of about 30 kms away from Bangapal as a result detail information has not been gathered, he said.
