The Supreme Court on Thursday asked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to reveal details of its investigation into the bomb making conspiracy that led to the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
Giving the agency time till Wednesday, the Bench of Justices Ranjan Gogoi and Navin Sinha wished to know if CBI had investigated the conspiracy behind how the bomb was made.
The Court was interested to know this fact after one of the accused in the Rajiv Gandhi killing, AG Perarivalan filed a petition in apex court claiming that the larger conspiracy behind the assassination is yet to be probed.
His lawyer Gopal Shankarnaraynan pointed out that the Jain Commission of Inquiry which made a detailed inquiry post-assassination highlighted the bomb making conspiracy among other
aspects. However, the Multi Disciplinary Monitoring Agency (MDMA) set up pursuant to Jain Commission, failed to address this issue in its action taken report submitted to Centre in a sealed cover.
The bench decided that it will examine only this aspect since Perarivalan is suffering life sentence on account of supplying two nine volt battery that went towards the preparation of the bomb used to kill Gandhi.
